An accurate, rapid, and reliable multiresidue QuEChERS method based on gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was developed for the determination of 235 pesticides in challenging, dry, complex herb matrices (Centaurea cyanus L., Matricaria chamomilla L., Thymus vulgaris L.). Sample mass and the type of cleanup sorbent used to estimate the procedure's effectiveness were optimized. Purification steps with ChloroFiltr, ENVI-Carb, GCB, octadecyl, PSA, and Z-Sep as cleanup sorbents and a step without purification were compared. To minimize the matrix effect and obtain acceptable recoveries for pesticides, 2 g of herb sample and 10 mL acetonitrile, followed by d-SPE cleanup step with a combination of 150 mg PSA/ 45 mg ENVI-Carb/900 mg MgSO 4 , and additionally 50 μL of 5% formic acid and some droplets of dodecane, were needed. Matrix effects for the vast majority of pesticides were reduced (> 20%), showing suppression or enhancement. Most recoveries were in the range of 70-120% (RSD < 18%), reaching the quantification limit of 0.001 to 0.002 mg kg −1 . There was excellent linearity within the range from 0.001 to 2.00 μg mL −1 , and a correlation coefficient higher than 0.999 was obtained. Expanded measurement uncertainty was estimated to be between 4 and 43%. Finally, the developed method was successfully employed to identify and quantify pesticide residues in the analysis of 46 real herb samples.

Medicinal plant safety is a rising challenge worldwide due to the continued overuse of pesticides to their maximum residue limits. Due to the high demand for medicinal plants, their production is being increased and sometimes protected by pesticide use. The analysis of these residues requires robust analytical methods to ensure the safety and quality of medicinal plants. Developing effective sample preparation for detecting pesticides is challenging, due to their diverse natures, classes, and physico‐chemical characteristics. Hence, existing techniques and strategies are needed to improve the reliability of the results. The review discusses the current state of sample preparation techniques, analytical methods, and instrumental technologies employed in pesticide residue analysis in medicinal plants. It highlights the challenges, limitations, and advancements in the field, providing insights into the analytical strategies used to detect and quantify pesticide residues. Reliable, accessible, affordable, and high‐resolution analytical procedures are essential to ensure that pesticide levels in medicinal plants are effectively regulated. By understanding the complexities of pesticide residue analysis in medicinal plants, this review article aims to support the conservation of medicinal plant resources, promote public health, and contribute to the development of sustainable strategies for ensuring the safety and quality of medicinal plants in Nepal. The findings of this review will benefit researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in the conservation of medicinal plant resources and the promotion of public health.

Preparation and application of chlorpyrifos molecularly imprinted solid‐phase microextraction probes for the residual determination of organophosphorous pesticides in fresh and dry foods

A solid-phase microextraction probe was prepared on the surface of a stainless-steel wire through molecular sol-gel imprinting technology using chlorpyrifos as a template molecule, tetraethoxysilane as a sol-gel precursor, and acrylamide and β-cyclodextrin as functional monomers. The polymer was characterized by infrared spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the selectivity and the parameters including the type and volume of the extraction solvents, ionic strength, pH, temperature, extraction time, stirring speed, and desorption time affecting extraction performance were evaluated. Under the optimum solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography conditions, the linear ranges were 0.25-25.0 μg/L for chlorpyrifos, quinalphos, triazophos, pirimiphos-methyl, and chlorpyrifos-methyl with the correlation coefficient above 0.99. The detection limits (S/N = 3) were in the range of 0.02-0.07 μg/L and the RSDs were <7.3%. The developed method was successfully used to determine the multi-residues of chlorpyrifos, quinalphos, triazophos, pirimiphos-methyl, and chlorpyrifos-methyl in green peppers and cinnamon with satisfactory recoveries.
