A multi‐module microfluidic platform for continuous pre‐concentration of water‐soluble ions and separation of oil droplets from oil‐in‐water (O/W) emulsions using a DC‐biased AC electrokinetic technique

Abstract: A novel continuous flow microfluidic platform specifically designed for environmental monitoring of O/W emulsions during an aftermath of oil spills is reported herein. Ionized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are toxic are readily released from crude oil to the surrounding water phase through the smaller oil droplets with enhanced surface area. Hence, a multi-module microfluidic device is fabricated to form ion enrichment zones in the water phase of O/W emulsions for the ease of detection and to separate… Show more

“…ICP is an ionic transport phenomenon which occurs near perm selective membrane (i.e. Nafion ® ) under the presence of a DC electric field by the formation of an ion depletion zone and an ion enrichment zone . Under the DC electric field, ions tend to move towards either cathode or anode.…”

“…Also, these methods require handling large quantities of media and other solutions during the process of cell enumeration which end as biological waste . Under such circumstances, microfluidic devices become a viable solution by offering advantages like reduced sample quantities, reduced assay time, and portability . Up to date, several microfluidic devices have been proposed for the detection of E. coli based on cell capturing with aid of various biological receptors or cell amplification.…”

“…Apart from the voltage requirement, these bulk electroporation devices cannot do single‐cell handling and manipulations . Nowadays, microfluidics has a wide range of applications because it can provide precise control of experimental conditions . Microfluidic devices allow isolation, trapping, merging, and electroporation of a single cell.…”
