A multi-institutional study of the impact of open textbook adoption on the learning outcomes of post-secondary students

Abstract: In some educational settings, the cost of textbooks approaches or even exceeds the cost of tuition. Given limited resources, it is important to better understand the impacts of free open educational resources (OER) on student outcomes. Utilizing digital resources such as OER can substantially reduce costs for students. Fischer, Hilton, Robinson and Wiley (2015) focused on course completion, final grade, and enrollment intensity measures in a multi-institution study but indicated that more replicative studies were necessary and suggested that questions pertaining to the grades individual students receive when using OER vs. traditional resources would be of value.…”

“…Fischer, Hilton III, Robinson, and Wiley (2015) analyzed the 2 nd year of OER adoption in the same schools as did Robinson (2015) (who examined the first year of adoption). They sought to know whether the adoption of no-cost digital textbooks had an impact on post-secondary students' learning outcomes.…”

“…In a second study, students using an open textbook performed similarly to those using a traditional copyrighted textbook when given only half as much time as students using a traditional copyrighted textbook to learn the material. Fischer, Hilton, Robinson, and Wiley (2015) completed one of the largest studies on this topic, with over 16,000 participating students at ten United States institutions. They looked at three different measures of student success to determine the efficacy of an open textbook: course completion, completion with a grade of C-or better, and course grade.…”

“…The largest study, using multiple measures, found students performed better in some courses when assigned an open textbook compared to when assigned a traditional copyrighted textbook (Fischer et al, 2015). It would be appropriate to deduce, at best, that OER are beneficial to students.…”
