A Multi-indicator Approach for Smart Security Policy Making

Abstract: Measuring urban crime is a well-established practice for many police forces, local governments and public administrations all over the world. There seems to be, however, a large gap between the rigorous academic definition of how crime indicators should be calculated and interpreted and the actual use that is made of them. Crime counts and rates are unadvisedly put out with little effort to clarify their different meaning; population-based crime rates remain a standard measure despite quite compelling argument… Show more

“…This interesting approach provides a new perspective on incidents like predatory crime, arson, or criminal damage, occurring in the open space. The very specific street pattern of the downtown area of Szczecin consisting of many star-shaped places and streets that are often not parallel to each other, may be a good study area for verifying the results obtained by Bella di et al [42,43].…”

“…In the research developed by di Bella et al [68] provided a comparative study including traditional crime indicators by employing three multivariate data analysis techniques: (Principal Components Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling and Partial Order Scalogram Analysis by (order-preserving) Coordinates). The original dataset included all crime incident reports collected by local Carabinieri at three stations during the time period from January 1, 2009 to July 27, 2010 in the Marassi neighborhood in the city of Genoa, Italy.…”

“…), the use of POSAC is particularly suitable when the objective is to rank the observations (e.g. : Patil and Taillie 2004;di Bella et al 2015). It can thus be useful in our case, where the objective is to rank EDs from the least to the most performing in terms of Cost-efficiency and Quality of care provided.…”
