A Multi-focus Assessment Scale for Use With Frail Elderly Populations

Abstract: This paper reports the development of a psychological assessment instrument for evaluating the deteriorated elderly patient. The instrument provides information on patient function in eight areas including communication abilities, cognitive status and mood. Analyses were undertaken to determine the psychometric properties of each component of the instrument. Examination of the means and standard deviations indicated that the full range was used for each scale. Examination of interrater reliability yielded valu… Show more

“…Detailed neuropsychological examination was performed with a test battery which included the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (Wechsler,198 l), Raven's Progressive Matrices (Raven, 1965), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (Berg, 1948), Word Fluency Test (Benton and Hamsher, 1978), Wechsler Memory Scale (Wechslcr, 1945), Benton Visual Retention (Benton, 1974), Rey Auditory Learning Test (Rey, 19591, and the Jacobs Cognitive Capacity Screening Examination (Jacobs et al, 1977). Patients with dementia identified by these tests were assessed further by using the Mattis Dementia Scale (Coblentz et al, 1973), the Multi-Focus Assessment Scale for the Frail Elderly (Coval et al, 1985), and the Token Test (Boller and Vignolo, 1966). If a demented patient could not complete a more difficult test, an easier one was employed to evaluate residual abilities.…”
