A multi-criteria decision-making framework for assessing the quality and cost of facility layout alternatives: a case study

Abstract: The paper presents a multi-phase framework for assessing the quality and cost of facility layout alternatives. The framework utilizes life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) and multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) to account for economical and qualitative aspects. Lifecycle considerations include costs of development, investment, construction or production, usage, and scrapping. A test of the proposed framework was performed at the Swedish Mail Terminal in the town of Alvesta, a part of Posten Sweden AB. The terminal… Show more

“…Facility layout greatly influences the production system in terms of material handling costs, lead time, and work-in-process (WIP) inventory. 1 It is a long-standing research topic involving the physical arrangements of a number of non-overlapping facilities including workstations, machines, and utilities. 2 Material handling costs are one of the most crucial factors to measure the rationality of a layout since they account for 20%-50% of the overall operating costs and 15%-70% of the total manufacturing costs.…”

“…The supplier selection is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. A number of MCDM methods have been proposed, 1,2 including analytic hierarchy process (AHP), 3,4 analytic network process (ANP), 5 technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) 6,7 and others. 8 The AHP is a structured technique for organizing and analyzing complex decisions, developed by Saaty 9,10 in the 1970s.…”
