A Much-threatened Lake: Lac des Oiseaux in Northeastern Algeria

Abstract: class for help in making fish censuses during the summer of 1990. We would also like to record our appreciation of the marine mechanical expertise of Martin Zavarla, of La Ribera, BCS, and for his sharing with us the natural history knowledge of Cabo Pulmo that has been preserved in his family for generations. The computer graphics are by Barry Bridge with Ellen H. Mower and Deborah Guy. REFERENCES

“…In a world reeling under the full brunt of global changes (human encroachment, loss of habitats, climate change, fragmentation, invasive species, etc. ), Algeria is no exception and the country has exhibited over the last decades a marked erosion of valuable wetlands (Samraoui et al 1992(Samraoui et al , 2011De Bélair and Samraoui 1994.

“…Unfortunately, illegal shooting of herons and egg and chick harvesting within protected and unprotected areas continue unabated (Samraoui, Menaï, and Samraoui 2007). However, loss of habitats and hydrological changes affecting wetlands harbouring heron colonies are considered the major threat in the area (Samraoui, de Belair, and Benyacoub 1992). Local conservation efforts have gained ground in recent decades but are still insufficient to provide sanctuaries to breeding water birds.…”
