A mountain of millipedes VIII. The genus Aquattuor Frederiksen, 2013 revisited – a new species from the Udzungwa Mts, Tanzania, another from the Nguru Mts and introduction of the first pair of male legs as a source of taxonomic characters (Diplopoda, Spirostreptida, Odontopygidae)

Abstract: A large, newly collected material of the genus Aquattuor from the Udzungwa Mts, Tanzania, has been studied. Two new species are described, viz., A. mollilobus sp. nov. from the Udzungwa Mts and A. nguruensis sp. nov. from the Nguru Mts, Tanzania. Aquattuor claudiahempae Enghoff & Frederiksen, 2015, is recorded as new for the Udzungwa fauna. Characters from the first pair of male legs are illustrated for all Aquattuor species and are shown to be useful for species discrimination. A new gonopodal difference … Show more

“…With nine species from the Udzungwa Mts now known, the Gomphodesmidae lag far behind the families so far treated in this series of papers: Odontopygidae with 41 known species (Enghoff 2018a(Enghoff , 2020, and one genus (Eviulisoma) of Paradoxosomatidae with 20 (Enghoff 2018b). Most likely, gomphodesmid diversity is higher in the Usambara Mts, from where eight species have currently been reported (Enghoff et al 2016), and several additional ones (in coll.…”

“…The diversity of odontopygids in the Eastern Arc Mountains is quite overwhelming (Fig. 2): the Udzungwas alone harbour 41 known species of Odontopygidae (Enghoff 2018(Enghoff , 2020, and the other Eastern Arc blocks between them are home to 47 odontopygid species of which 25 are described as new in the present paper. The high species numbers are in line with the status of the Eastern Arc Mountains as a biodiversity hotspot, either in their own right or as part of an East African Afromontane hotspot (Myers et al 2000;Burgess et al 2007; see also https://www.cepf.net/sites/default/files/cepf_eam_eng_r3.pdf [accessed 24 Nov. 2021]).…”

“…The present work in a way is a continuation of the series "A mountain of millipedes" which has dealt with millipedes, mainly odontopygids from the Udzungwa Mts -the largest of the Eastern Arc Mountain blocks in Tanzania (Enghoff 2014(Enghoff , 2016a(Enghoff , 2016b(Enghoff , 2016c(Enghoff , 2018(Enghoff , 2020. For this reason, the odontopygids of the Udzungwa Mts are only marginally touched upon in the present article.…”
