TWO FIGURESThis paper deals with the effect of exogenous corticotropin and epinephrine, and of hypophysectomy upon the nucleolus and nuclreus in the glomerular and fascicular zones of the adrenal cortex. It is another aspect of a general study of the immediate effects of a single stimulus upon the adrenal cortical cytology (Miller, '52, ' 5 3 ) . Estimations of the effects are quantitative, not only so as to be as nearly objective as possible but also because the immediate changes are so slight as not to be detectable upon visual inspection alone. The work was undertaken with the hope and expectation that this approach might augment the knowledge of how and where corticotropin affects secretory activity in cortical cells.
MATERIALS AND METHODSRats of the inbred Vanderbilt strain, 35 to 120 days old, were used throughout the experiments. Those which were hypophysectomized drank postoperativ, ely a 10% sucrose solution instead of plain water, and in addition to Wayne Dog Blox, the diet of the intact rats, had access to a soft diet.2 A t autopsy '
