A Morphologic, Pathologic, and Virologic Study of Anogenital Warts in Men

Abstract: We conclude that the morphologic appearance of anogenital warts does not necessarily correlate with HPV type. Histopathologic study is helpful in excluding other diagnoses but may be indeterminant in the diagnosis of venereal warts. All men with anogenital warts should be counseled, treated, and undergo follow-up regardless of HPV type.

“…Histologically, on the other hand, these two types of tumors have different characteristic features. A giant condyloma acuminatum has epidermal hyperplasia without extensive hyperkeratosis (4). Many koilocytes are observed, but the obvious hallmarks of true malignancy are not commonly found.…”

“…A giant condyloma acuminatum is a large, papillomatous, anogenital tumor, first described by Loewenstein in 1939 in English (1). Human papillomavirus type 6 (HPV-6) and type 11 (HPV-ll) are implicated as etiologic agents (2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Verrucous carcinoma is another exophytic, verrucous tumor in the anogenital region (7).…”

“…148 The central yeast form is positive on both PAS with diastase and GMS staining, whereas the spicules are negative for these two stains ( Fig. 248 To date, the precise nature of the eosinophilic spicules has not been entirely clarified. 636 In addition, the yeast stains with the anti-Sporothrix antibody, whereas the spicules do not.…”

“…Although condyloma acuminatum is traditionally defined as a fleshy exophytic lesion of the anogenital region, 612,613 it is now known that small inconspicuous lesions may occur on the penis, 614-616 vulva, and cervix. [617][618][619] The prevalence of HPV infection in the glans/corona region is significantly higher in uncircumcised men than in circumcised men.…”
