A recurrent theme in evolution is the repeated, independent origin of broadly adaptive, architecturally and functionally similar traits and structures. One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distribution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs. Diversification rates were correlated in a few cases with the presence of varices, especially in the Muricidae and Tonnoidea, but more than half of the origins are represented by three or fewer genera. Varices arose many times in many forms, but generally in a phylogenetically clumped manner (more frequently in particular higher taxa), a pattern common to many adaptations.ADDITIONAL KEYWORDS: evolutionary trends -fossil record -Gastropoda -shell sculpture -snails.

The Nassariidae are considered to be carrion feeders. Nevertheless, the feeding habits of this family also include herbivory, detritivory and carnivory. In the present study, we observed the diet and feeding behaviour of Buccinanops cochlidium from northern Patagonic waters. B. cochlidium fed mainly on living bivalves and, as an opportunistic carrion feeder, on diverse dead animals. It was commonly observed to feed in groups. When one individual of B. cochlidium caught a prey, other individuals approached and opportunistically fed on the remains. Juveniles fed exclusively on carrion, including prey recently killed by conspecific adult snails (39.5% of the scavenging events). Carrion represented 57.8% of the B. cochlidium diet on the whole. Predation seemed to be related to the size of B. cochlidium individuals, in particular, the foot, which is used to hold and manipulate the prey. We observed no feeding activity for gravid B. cochlidium females in the field. In summary, our results show that B. cochlidium is a carnivorous species, both as a scavenger and as a predator, that feeds mainly on dead crabs and living bivalves. Adults of B. cochlidium predated actively and fed opportunistically on dead animals of larger sizes, whereas hatchlings and juveniles fed exclusively on carrion, including by-products generated by the predation of larger B. cochlidium individuals.

The Atlantic dog whelk, Nucella lapillus, is a marine snail that exhibits divergent evolution in response to habitat adaptation, resulting in distinct populations at the phenotypic, genotypic, and karyotypic levels. In this study, we utilized short- and long-read NGS data to perform a de novo assembly of the entire mitochondrial genome of N. lapillus and developed a multiplex PCR protocol to sequence most of its length using ONT sequencing. Our analysis revealed a typical circular configuration of 16,474 bp in length with 13 protein-coding genes, 22 different tRNA genes, 2 of them showing two copies, 2 rRNA genes, and a control region. Long-read sequencing enabled us to identify a 1826 bp perfect inverted repeat within the control region. Comparative analysis of the mitogenomes of related species in the Muricidae family revealed a conserved gene configuration for N. lapillus. We found a low genetic diversity, as well as a moderate genetic differentiation among the studied populations. Interestingly, there was no observed differentiation between the two chromosomal races, suggesting either introgression and permanent incorporation of the mitochondrial DNA haplotype from one of the chromosomal races into the other or a slower evolutionary rate of the mtDNAs with respect to that of the karyotypes. Our study serves as a foundation for comparative genomics and evolutionary investigations in this species.
