The modular multilevel converter is a promising converter technology for various high-voltage high-power applications. Despite the apparent simplicity of the circuit, the inherent dynamics of the converter and the balancing of the sub-module capacitor voltages impose high requirements on the control system, which can be implemented in quite different ways. To illustrate this, and to provide a guidance for future research on the subject, this paper presents an evaluation of four different control and modulation methods. The investigation is based on experiments on a down-scaled 10 kVA converter having 10 submodules per phase leg. The main items to be investigated are dynamics within the sub-modules, arm voltages and circulating currents. It is found that the suggested open-loop control method provides the fastest arm-voltage response and that the balancing approach based on a sorting algorithm is substantially faster and less complicated to implement than the method using a dedicated voltage controller for each sub-module.

This paper presents the modular multilevel converter as medium voltage motor driver. An investigation of the capacitor requirements is performed and a novel control method, based in the inner current control, is proposed. This method can ensure the capacitor balancing as well minimizes the harmonic current in the converter phases. The control method is evaluated by computational simulations of a three-phase driver of a 350 kW, 2.3 kV induction motor. The simulated results have proven the effectiveness of the control structure in the startup procedure and steady state operation.

Abstract--Power electronic converter-fed high performance AC drives belong to high-tech industry and are one of main factors for energy saving and productivity growth. This paper reviews present state and trends in development of key parts of controlled induction motor drive systems: converter topologies, modulation methods, as well as control and estimation techniques. Following topologies are described: Two-and Multi-level Voltage Source Converters, Current Source Converters and Direct Converters. Among the modulation techniques are briefly presented: conventional bipolar and unipolar PWM, space vector modulation (SVM) with extension for multilevel converters, harmonic control techniques, variable frequency modulation (hysteresis, nearest level, and model predictive techniques). About the control strategies, the generic torque control methods are described in two groups: linear and nonlinear controllers. In linear group are presented field oriented control (FOC), direct torque control (DTC) with voltage SVM, and DTC with flux vector modulation (DTC-FVM). The group of nonlinear control include: classical switching table based hysteresis DTC, direct self control (DSC) and predictive DTC scheme. Also, selected simple flux vector observers/estimators are discussed.
