Exergames help senior players to get physically active by promoting fun and enjoyment while exercising. However, most exergames are not designed to produce recommended levels of exercise that elicit adequate physical responses for optimal training in the aged population. In this project, we developed physiological computing technologies to overcome this issue by making real-time adaptations in a custom exergame based on recommendations for targeted heart rate (HR) levels. This biocybernetic adaptation was evaluated against conventional cardiorespiratory training in a group of active senior adults through a floor-projected exergame and a smartwatch to record HR data. Results showed that the physiologically-augmented exergame leads players to exert around 40% more time in the recommended HR levels, compared to the conventional training, avoiding over exercising and maintaining good enjoyment levels. Finally, we made available our biocybernetic adaptation software tool to enable the creation of physiological adaptive videogames, permitting the replication of our study.

There is a growing interest of using technologies to propose solutions for healthcare issues. One of such issues is the incidence of chronic diseases, which are responsible for a considerable proportion of worldwide mortality. It is possible to prevent the development of such diseases using tools and methods that instruct the population. To achieve this, mobile games provide a powerful environment for teaching different subjects to user, without them actively knowing that they are learning new concepts. Despite the growing interest of using mobile games in healthcare, more specifically by patients with chronic diseases, in the best of our knowledge there are no studies that address the current research being published in the area. To close this gap, we carried out a systematic mapping study to synthesize an overview of the area. Five databases were searched and more than 1200 studies were analyzed and filtered. Among them, 17 met the the inclusion and exclusion criteria defined in this work. The results show that there is still room for research in this area, since the studies focus on a younger audience rather than proposing solutions for all ages. Furthermore, the number of chronic conditions being addressed is still small, obesity and diabetes are prevalent. Besides, the full capacity of game features that foster learning through games are not being employed, the majority of games proposed by the articles encompass less than half of these features.

ISO/IEEE 11073 Personal Health Device (X73-PHD) Standards Compliant Systems: A Systematic Literature Review

Since the introduction of the ISO/IEEE 11073 personal health device (X73-PHD) standards, as part of ISO/IEEE 11073 family of standards, it has been applied to many health systems developed for personal use. In this systematic literature review, we review existing literature collected using three databases: Scopus, Pub Med, and Web of Science. We propose a classification for personal health systems based on the location in which they are used, the technology used to develop them, and the purpose which is determined by the targeted users. We found 51% of the devices used in such systems are standardized while approximately 40% are not and five systems did not specify the device status (9%). Various adaption techniques were used for standardization. Besides, the pulse oximeter is the most used device in such systems since it was used in 43% of them. In addition, we present the role of the X73-PHD standards in the Internet of Things (IoT) and tele-healthcare systems, discuss the challenges of utilizing this set of standards in health monitoring systems and converting the non-standardized devices into standardized ones. Finally, we propose the requirements of personal health systems based on our review of the literature.
