A modular computational framework for automated peak extraction from ion mobility spectra

Abstract: BackgroundAn ion mobility (IM) spectrometer coupled with a multi-capillary column (MCC) measures volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air or in exhaled breath. This technique is utilized in several biotechnological and medical applications. Each peak in an MCC/IM measurement represents a certain compound, which may be known or unknown. For clustering and classification of measurements, the raw data matrix must be reduced to a set of peaks. Each peak is described by its coordinates (retention time in the MC… Show more

“…A spectrum can be used to extract information from a sample such as the chemical and physical structure of a material, 1,2 or the concentration of a solution. 3,4 Spectrum is widely used in many fields such as mass spectrometry and chromatography. However, random noises and irregular baseline distortions, which can arise from several hardware and processing sources, inevitably exist in the spectrum.…”

“…D'Addario et al use a peak model estimation algorithm in a modular framework for automated peak detection PEAX. 71 Here, each peak is described by a model function consisting of two shifted inverse Gaussian distributions and an additional peak volume parameter. D'Addario reported that her approach yielded 74% agreement with manual peak annotation.…”

“…The Cluster Editing problem is fixedparameter tractable when parameterized by k, the total number of edge editing operations [7,18]. Over the last decade, Cluster Editing has been well studied from both theoretical and practical perspectives (see, for example, [5,8,9,11,12,14,15,19,20]).…”
