Accurately quantifying spatiotemporal changes in surface water is essential for water resources management, nevertheless, the dynamics of Poyang Lake surface water areas with high spatiotemporal resolution, as well as its responses to climate change, still face considerable uncertainties. Using the time series of Sentinel-1 images with 6- or 12-day intervals, the Sentinel-1 water index (SWI), and SWI-based water extraction model (SWIM) from 2015 to 2020 were used to document and study the short-term characteristics of southwest Poyang Lake surface water. The results showed that the overall accuracy of surface water area was satisfactory with an average of 91.92%, and the surface water area ranged from 129.06 km2 on 2 March 2017 to 1042.57 km2 on 17 July 2016, with significant intra- and inter-month variability. Within the 6-day interval, the maximum change of lake area was 233.42 km2 (i.e., increasing from 474.70 km2 up to 708.12 km2). We found that the correlation coefficient between the water area and the 45-day accumulated precipitation reached to 0.75 (p < 0.001). Moreover, a prediction model was built to predict the water area based on climate records. These results highlight the significance of high spatiotemporal resolution mapping for surface water in the erratic southwest Poyang Lake under a changing climate. The automated water extraction algorithm proposed in this study has potential applications in delineating surface water dynamics at broad geographic scales.

The remote sensing inversion of the water quality parameters of a complex river network in the absence of historical ground data is a difficult problem in the field of remote sensing. In this paper, a sub-regional inversion method for typical water quality parameters is presented for a complex river network using Gaofen-1 satellite data. Qidong’s rivers were selected as the survey region, and different band combination models and datasets on different river sub-regions were used to perform the remote sensing inversion, which realized the inversion of the permanganate index (CODMn), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) in the rivers. The results show that all the coefficients of determination (R^2) of the inversion models are larger than 0.5, indicating an increase of about 0.4 when compared with the inversion method of the whole region, indicating good relevance. Water quality data and satellite data collected at different times were used for validation, which showed good results. On the basis of the water quality inversion, the key polluted areas were extracted in combination with on-site surveys to find the pollution source in order to verify the results of the inversion. The sub-region inversion method proposed in this paper can be used for the remote sensing inversion of the water quality parameters of complex river networks in the absence of historical ground data.

The use of remote sensing technology applied to measure the quality of continental waters has grown exponentially since the turn of the century. Using different sensors on board satellites or airborne platforms, the estimation of water quality parameters has been carried out through both empirical and analytical approaches. This work aims to review the specific scientific production of the last two decades to assess how the evolution of the sensors and platforms have affected the potential and the limitations of remote sensing technologies to estimate water quality parameters in lakes and reservoirs. The study also focuses on the accuracy of remote sensing techniques for the major optically active parameters: chlorophyll-a and phycocyanin, Secchi disk depth and turbidity. The article is subdivided by sections dedicated to each of these parameters. A review of remote sensing platforms and sensors precedes the parameters sections. The past 20 years have brought a large body of articles on how remote sensing data can be used to estimate these parameters. Empirical methods dominate overwhelmingly with a four to one proportion over analytical approaches. Environmental factors such as season, complexity of water and concentration loads appear to exert a strong control over the quality of the results. Recent platforms and sensors have brought noticeable improvements over results achieved in this period.
