SUMMARYMillimeter-wave (mm-wave) radio is attracting attention as one of the key enabling physical layer technologies for the fifthgeneration (5G) mobile access and backhaul. This paper aims at clarifying possible roles of mm-wave radio in the 5G development and performing a comprehensive literature survey on mm-wave radio channel modeling essential for the feasibility study. Emphasis in the literature survey is laid on grasping the typical behavior of mm-wave channels, identifying missing features in the presently available channel models for the design and evaluation of the mm-wave radio links within the 5G context, and exemplifying different channel modeling activities through analyses performed in the authors' group. As a key technological element of the mm-wave radios, reduced complexity beamforming is also addressed. Design criteria of the beamforming are developed based on the spatial multipath characteristics of measured indoor mm-wave channels.

Abstract-Self-heterodyne OFDM (self-het OFDM) is known to provide complete immunity against frequency-offset and phase noise, with a much lower RF frontend complexity, when compared to conventional OFDM techniques. Self-het OFDM is considered to be a promising physical layer technology for millimeter-wave RF communications, where the implementation of low complexity stable oscillators is technically difficult. Although self-het OFDM has great potential, it has only been studied for additive white Gaussian noise and two-ray channel models. In this paper, we analyze the performance of self-het OFDM for general frequency selective channels and show that the standard self-het OFDM undergoes an outage if the RF carrier is affected by deep fading. In order to avoid this, we introduce a new technique called smart carrier positioning. We show both analytically and by simulation that the smart carrier positioning can improve the diversity order and the performance of standard self-het OFDM by approximately 4dB at bit error rate of 10 −2 . In addition, we investigate the optimum power allocation between the carrier and the OFDM subcarriers under frequency selective conditions.

The propagations of 60 GHz millimeter-wave system, which occupies an enormous operation bandwidth, are always known to be intensively dispersive. This may, in practice, pose great challenges to the estimation of channel state information. In this article, we investigated a promising compressed sensing (CS) algorithm and its practical applications in the channel estimations of emerging 60 GHz millimeter-wave communications. By fully considering the particular characteristics of 60 GHz propagations and further utilizing another kind of channel sparsity, i.e., the specific block cluster sparsity embodied by the identified multiple clusters, a novel cluster sparsity compressed sensing (CS-CS) algorithm is proposed subsequently. Based on the provided experimental simulations, the comprehensive analysis on both the classical regularized orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm and our newly designed CS-CS algorithm are conducted. As has been demonstrated, the proposed new algorithm indeed shows a much superior performance compared with the other existing methods, which may significantly reduce the reconstruction error and hence improve the precision of channel estimation. At the same time, the time complexity of signal reconstruction of the new CS-CS algorithm may be simplified to some extent.
