Brazilian poultry production has reached unprecedented levels in recent years, especially regarding to the broiler chickens production activity. This increasing productivity is due to progressive implementation of technology in this sector of the animal production in Brazil, which is being mainly focused on improving the animal environment and also, the diets offered to the birds combined with genetic advances. One consequence of high productivity of broiler chickens is the exacerbated production of waste, especially used litter, which has high levels of nutrients, among which is the nitrogen (N), that makes the poultry litter a material with high biological potential to be used as fertilizer. One way of depleting the quality of the litter is through volatilization of N as gaseous ammonia (NH3). The cycling of N for a whole broiler barn has been poorly treated in the current Brazilian scientific literature, which is the reason why this literature review was developed. The aim was to depict all possible sources and sinks and the mechanisms transformation of N inside the barn. Special focus was given to the processes of formation and models of NH3 volatilization. As main conclusion, we observed that the increase in feed conversion ratio with age is one of the factors that contributed to non-utilization of N offered to broilers, implying in a higher concentration of this nutrient in the litter with increasing age and consequently potential of its loss through volatilized NH3.

Ammonia (NH3) emission from animal feeding operations (AFOs) has caused concerns on public health and environmental degradation, such as ecosystem acidification, eutrophication, and formation of PM2.5 fine particles. Current ammonia emission measurement methodologies are accurate and reliable, but time consuming, expensive, and impractical for most facilities. In the present study, an alternative and cost effective mass balance methodology was developed to predict the ammonia emission from animal facilities. The mass balance equations have been developed to eliminate needs for tracking manure flow rate to obtain accurate NH3 estimation. The methodology was applied to three manure-belt layer poultry houses with approximately 150,000 birds in each house in Ohio and validated using continuous ammonia emission measurement data. Feed, manure and egg samples were collected from the three houses in three seasons (cold, mild, and hot) to evaluate the seasonal variation of ammonia emission from the poultry facilities. Results show that this alternative mass balance method can estimate NH3 emission from manure-belt poultry layer house effectively. NH3 emission rate from manure belt poultry layer houses with manure removal every 3.5 to 5 days was 0.07-0.37 g NH3 bird-1day-1. These results agrees well with the NH3 emission values published in the previous literatures (0.027-0.616 g NH3 bird-1day-1), but were lower than the NH3 emission rate (0.1-0.86 g NH3 bird-1day-1) measured using continuous monitoring system. In the comparison analysis of NH3 measurement and estimation emissions, Normalized Mean Error (NME), Normalized Mean Square Error (NMSE) and Fractional Bias (FB) are calculated to be 52.05%, 85.32% and -70.36% respectively. This study suggests that manure removal time interval and air temperature can be important factors impacting NH3 emission. This mass balance method can only estimate total nitrogen loss in a whole production process, which is an upper bound of NH3-N loss. It is needed to quantify other nitrogen compound gas emissions, such as N2O, NOx, N2 for accurate NH3 emission estimation. It is well established that the livestock sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gases (GHG) and ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions. In this paper, the evolution of livestock NH 3 , methane (CH 4 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and particulate matter (PM) emissions is presented for the period 1960-2005 in Greece and the factors influencing the emission fluxes (such as livestock population changes, manure management systems in use) are examined and analyzed. Emission estimates are based on the updated EMEP/ CORINAIR methodology together with the revised IPCC guidelines; newly published, Greece-specific emission factors are used. The emissions level from livestock is evaluated and compared with the corresponding emissions from other anthropogenic sources in Greece. Geographical analysis concerning the distribution of animals and the subsequent NH 3 emissions is performed. Main results indicate high levels of emissions from 1960 to 1995, while emissions from 1995 to 2005 show a stabilizing trend.
