A modified Chi2 algorithm for discretization

Abstract: AbstractÐSince the ChiMerge algorithm was first proposed by Kerber in 1992, it has become a widely used and discussed discretization method. The Chi2 algorithm is a modification to the ChiMerge method. It automates the discretization process by introducing an inconsistency rate as the stopping criterion and it automatically selects the significance value. In addition, it adds a finer phase aimed at feature selection to broaden the applications of the ChiMerge algorithm. However, the Chi2 algorithm does not con… Show more

“…Since the evaluation function in our algorithm is proposed based on the heterogeneity compared to the entropy criterion, our method would be compared with Ent-MDLC, which is a well-known representative of entropy-based discretization methods. Its good performance has often been shown in previous research [7], [12], [15], [22]. It is recommended as the first choice when other things are equal, such as user need, class information, and other considerations [15].…”

“…In the bottom-up category, there are widely used algorithms such as ChiMerge [21], Chi2 [22], Modified Chi2 [23], and Extended Chi2 [24]. Bottom-up method starts with the complete list of all continuous value of the attribute as cut-points, so its computational complexity is usually higher than the top-down method [29].…”
