A modelling approach to evaluate the long-term effect of soil texture on spring wheat productivity under a rain-fed condition

Abstract: Soil surface texture is an important environmental factor that influences crop productivity because of its direct effect on soil water and complex interactions with other environmental factors. Using 30-year data, an agricultural system model (DSSAT-CERES-Wheat) was calibrated and validated. After validation, the modelled yield and water use (WU) of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) from two soil textures (silt loam and clay) under rain-fed condition were analyzed. Regression analysis showed that wheat grown… Show more

“…Thus, the assessment of soil moisture and rainfall in semiarid regions is crucial to understanding the variability in these areas and to support actions to mitigate the effects of water scarcity. Various studies have been conducted evaluating different semiarid regions of the world (Small and Kurc, 2002;Aina et al, 2007;Fischer et al, 2009;Asare et al, 2011;Mupangwa et al, 2011;Pathak et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2011;Badel et al, 2013;He et al, 2014;Barbosa et al, 2015;Paredes et al, 2015;Barbosa and Lakshmi Kumar, 2016).…”

“…This phenomenon will appear reversed in a drier period. He et al (2014) calculated 40% cereal yield reductions: the simulated yields of wheat were very sensitive because of soil texture. Afzalinia and Zabihi (2014) raised the problem of when to carry out the soil physical measurements.…”

“…DSSAT Ceres-Wheat was calibrated and validated by He et al (2014), who investigated two soil types using 30-year data: silt loam and clay soils. The effectiveness of inaccurate wheat yield predictions has been caused by the soil texture (soil physical properties) and the model predicted -39% yield compared to the actual measured ones (Fig.…”
