A Model of Health for Family Caregivers of Elders

Abstract: Family members who provide care to their loved ones experience changes in their own health. The caregiver health model (CGHM) is a new model that identifies health holistically and identifies four determinant(s) that contribute to the health status of the family caregiver. The purpose is to introduce the CGHM: Hypothesis 1: the determinants of health in the CGHM contribute to the health of the Caregiver, Hypothesis 2: the determinants of health contribute to changes in the caregivers’ health at 8 and 16 weeks,… Show more

“…The 10-item GHS (Hays et al, 2009) is designed to assess general domains of health and functioning, including overall physical health, mental health, social health, pain, fatigue, and overall perceived quality of life. The GHS demonstrated good reliability (α = .81) in a study of family caregivers of elders (Weierbach & Cao, 2016).…”

“…Structural equation models in mplus 8 [37] were used to examine the association between a caregiver's involvement in caregiving tasks and social support and a caregiver's engagement in self-care activities, as well as to examine whether self-care activity served as a mediator in the relationship between social support and caregiver outcomes. Latent variables were used for social support (three indicators: received support, social interaction, and satisfaction of support), self-care activity (three indicators: physical health checkups, restorative activities, and sleep), and caregiver outcomes (three indicators: caregiver burden, positive perceptions of caregiving, and depression) in all the structural equation models.…”

“…To synthesize the review findings, we first listed all constructs assessed in included studies. These were then grouped for overlap or relatedness to other constructs along the Caregiver Health Model, 21 originally developed for family caregivers of elders. This model places caregiver health at the center, impacted by caregiver needs, tasks, beliefs and attitudes, and health promotion behaviors (eg, nutrition, physical activity, and other lifestyle choices) as determinants, and considers this within the environmental context.…”

“…The CGHM was used to map constructs and outcomes found in included studies. 21 While not developed for neurooncology caregiving, the model approaches caregivers comprehensively, placing their health at the center impacted by needs, tasks, beliefs and attitudes, and health promotion behaviors while taking environmental factors into account. There is a noticeable gap in the neurooncology caregiver literature related to health promotion behaviors.…”
