Multiple site diversity systems are foreseen for earth to satellite paths operating at frequencies above 10 GHz in localities with high rain‐induced attenuation. A recently suggested model for the prediction of diversity performance is properly modified by considering also the stratified type of rain. The modified method uses the assumption of lognormal unconditional distribution of rainfall for the location under consideration. Numerical results are applied to several satellite systems operating in various locations in the United States and Italy. Some useful conclusions are deduced.

SUMMARYIn this article we describe a statistical model for the assessment of the short-term frequency scaling ratio between rain attenuations at cm and mm wavelengths, taking into consideration the fluctuations arising from the type of rain (mainly the raindrop size distribution). The model has been derived from measured data, using the large attenuation database collected in Spino d'Adda, Italy, during the ITALSAT 8-years experiment at 18.7, 39.6 and 49:5 GHz; but can be applied to any pair of frequencies. By applying the model it is possible to generate, by means of a generator of random Gaussian numbers, samples of the up-link attenuation, for a given down link attenuation, to be employed in the simulation of up-link power control (ULPC) slant path channels.

The main propagation effect on interference between adjacent Earth-space paths is differential rain attenuation. In the present paper a method to predict the rain differential attenuation statistics is proposed which is based on a model convective rain cell structure of the rainfall medium. The assumption that the point rainfall statistics follow a lognormal form is also adopted. The results of this method are compared with the available simulation data for the differential attenuation over pairs of paths in the Montreal area.
