A model for software product quality

Abstract: A model for software product quality is defined. It has been formulated by associating a set of quality-carrying properties with each of the structural forms that are used to define the statements and statement components of a programming language. These quality-carrying properties are in turn linked to the high-level quality attributes of the International Standard for Software Product Evaluation ISO-9126. The model supports building quality into software, definition of language-specific coding standards, sys… Show more

“…Quality, not only describes and measures the functional aspects of the software (what a system does), but also describes extra functional properties (how the system is built and performs). Different software quality models were proposed by various researchers in [2][3][4][5]. These models are proposed for generic software applications.…”

“…Various researchers have worked in developing suitable models that define software quality in different perspectives as described in ISO/IEC 9126 Model [2], Boehm's Model [3], Dromey's Model [4] and the FURPS Model [5]. Quality, not only describes and measures the functional aspects of the software (what a system does), but also describes extra functional properties (how the system is built and performs).…”

“…Computer science must focus on constructing tools which facilitate building quality into software rather than burdening developers with the responsibility for ensuring quality. Unless we adopt this philosophy, software engineering will not make substantial progress in the development of quality software [2]. i).…”

“…Furthermore, DQM distinguishes more clearly between the quality-carrying properties used for measurement (following the work of Dromey [16] and Wagner et al [22]) and the impact of these properties on object oriented design principles. Although QMOOD tries to structure the assessment systematically, it still lacks a consideration of design properties from a broader view.…”

“…As a result thereof, the quality models simply decomposed the concept of quality in more tangible quality attributes. The decomposition of quality attributes further enhanced by introducing the distinction between product components as quality carrying properties and externally visible quality attributes [16]. Due to pressure from practitioner and based on the quality models from the late 80s, the ISO 9126 standard was defined in 1991.…”
