The business requirements for better document management in engineering environments are forever increasing and the underlying technologies for implementing system solutions are changing rapidly. In these contexts, it is vital that the strategic aspects of the document management decision-making processes and the user and functional requirements of document management are fully understood prior to consideration of shorter term implementation decisions. This paper goes some way to providing guidelines on addressing these issues through the development of a structured approach to engineering document management, coupled with the specification of generic process and data models which can form the basis for developing company-specific strategies, plans, models and requirements before committing to investments in technology to implement solutions. The paper is therefore specifically aimed at those engineering, production, project and quality managers within manufacturing companies who have the responsibility for implementing data and document management systems. Relationships with relevant standards and technology, and future issues are briefly discussed.

Abstract. We present an approach of how to extract automatically an XML document structure from a conceptual data model that describes the content of a document. We use UML class diagrams as the conceptual model that can be represented in XML syntax (XMI). The algorithm we present in the paper is implemented as a set of rules that transform the UML class diagram into an adequate document type definition (DTD). The generation of the DTD from the semantic model corresponds with the logical XML database design with the DTD as the database schema description. Therefore, we consider many semantic issues, such as the dealing with relationships, how to express them in a DTD in order to minimize the loss of semantics. Since our algorithm is based on XSLT stylesheets, its transformation rules can be modified in a very flexible manner in order to consider different mapping strategies and requirements.

This paper presents an XML-Based Collaborative Documents Model. It describes the content system and related information of Collaborative Documents needed in the Real-Time Collaborative Environment which includes access control, concurrence control, document management, document state records and so on. Using XML to define a set of collaborative documents tags and DTD formats, then describe the collaborative documents. In this way, users can understand the meaning of data in the documents, and the system can process some data, such as access control, data search, data sort, storage management and the standard of communications. In this papec we design a basic real-time collaborative system frame based on the JSDT technology of the SUN Company.
