A Model for Cochlear Implant Electrode Insertion and Force Evaluation: Results with a New Electrode Design and Insertion Technique

Abstract: The model used for this study provides valuable information to cochlear implant surgeons and design engineers. The Contour Advance electrode, inserted with the Advance Off Stylet technique, represents an improvement over the Contour electrode inserted with the standard insertion technique.

“…In these studies, the forces applied were perpendicular to the basilar membrane; this situation was not comparable with the force applied during electrode array insertion as the vector of the force may differ (Roland, 2005). A measure of the forces during CI insertion have been made by Rohani et al (2014) who studied the insertion profile of three different electrodes in six fresh temporal bones.…”

“…A standard commercially available electrode array has also been used for hearing preservation with full or partial insertion of the array using an atraumatic surgical www.intechopen.com technique (Roland, 2005). Using a prospective multicenter study, Fraysse et al (Fraysse et al, 2006) compared changes in hearing threshold levels after 27 patients were implanted with the Nucleus 24 Contour Advance perimodiolar electrode array.…”

“…This approach was abandoned in favor of scala tympani insertions. Regardless of the approach used, it is evident from previous works [2][3][4][5][6] that the current electrode insertions cause intracochlear trauma. This is due to lack of real-time imaging assistance, lack of force feedback during the insertion process, and the lack of controllability of the flexible electrode arrays.…”
