“…Although studies have documented the detrimental effects of COVID-19 related concerns on mental health (e.g., Hotez et al, 2022; Lu et al, 2021), few studies have sought to examine potential mechanisms underlying this effect. Given that exposure to trauma and processing posttraumatic stress have been found to be associated with identity distress (Scott et al, 2014; Wiley et al, 2011), we hypothesized that identity distress would serve as a potential mechanism through which COVID-19 related worries might be associated with psychological and academic adjustment among college-attending emerging adults.…”
