A minimum dataset for a standard adult transthoracic echocardiogram: a guideline protocol from the British Society of Echocardiography

Abstract: There have been significant advances in the field of echocardiography with the introduction of a number of new techniques into standard clinical practice. Consequently, a 'standard' echocardiographic examination has evolved to become a more detailed and time-consuming examination that requires a high level of expertise. This Guideline produced by the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) Education Committee aims to provide a minimum dataset that should be obtained in a comprehensive standard echocardiogram… Show more

“…A full standard echocardiogram was undertaken by a single experienced sonographer using a commercially available ultrasound system (Vivid Q, GE Healthcare, Horten, Norway) and a 1.5-4 MHz phased array transducer. All images were acquired in accordance with British Society of Echocardiography guidelines [16]. Images were stored in a raw DICOM format and exported to an offline workstation (EchoPac version 6.0, GE Healthcare, Horten, Norway) for subsequent analysis.…”

“…For example, when a referral is made for an immediate echocardiogram querying massive pulmonary embolus, it may be neither appropriate nor possible to perform a full study; right heart strain or direct evidence of an embolus should instead be sought. In such patients, a complete study in compliance with the BSE minimum dataset (25) could be performed, if it is clinically indicated, in the fullness of time. When protocols become available for the management of specific aspects of critical illness – for example, when assessing fluid balance (26) – these criteria should be followed.…”

“…The detection of changes in structure and function in native valves may be subtle and echocardiography should be performed by properly‐trained, accredited professionals . In each case, a standard transthoracic study should be performed following minimum standards . In addition to this, however, careful attention should be taken to perform semi‐quantitative assessment of valve structure and function to detect the changes typical of DA agonist therapy.…”
