A Miniaturized FSS-Based Eight-Element MIMO Antenna Array for Off/On-Body WBAN Telemetry Applications

Abstract: In this paper, a compact multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for an off/on-body wireless body area network (WBAN) is presented. The proposed antenna comprises eight elements arranged in a side-by-side, orthogonal, and across configuration on a planar laminate. This MIMO system achieves wideband impedance matching, i.e., fractional bandwidth (FBW) = 111% (7600 MHz) when placed off-body and FBW = 110% (7500 MHz) when placed on-body. The achieved bandwidth covers the ultrawideband (UWB) ranges 3.1–10.6 … Show more

“…Therefore, one of the main concerns in UWB MIMO antenna development is how to improve cell-to-cell isolation. Creating decoupling structures [3], [4], cutting slits [5] loading metamaterials, decoupling frequency-selective surfaces [6], electromagnetic bandgap structures [7]- [9], neutralisation lines [10]- [13], and parasitic cell decoupling [14], as well as Indonesian J Elec Eng & Comp Sci ISSN: 2502-4752  erroneous grounding structures [15], [16] and polarisation diversity techniques [17]- [19], are typical methods to increase MIMO antenna isolation. The isolation between cells is effectively increased to more than 2 dB using two-port MIMO antenna [3] uses a "T"-shaped separation structure between cells, but bandwidth is only 2.33-6.71 GHz, and the size is too huge.…”

“…Researchers have adopted many techniques to improve the isolation between elements in MIMO antenna systems. These techniques include the loading of FSS (Frequency Selective Surface) sheets [15,16], absorbers [17], metamaterial [18][19][20][21][22], defective ground structures (DGS) [23][24][25][26], and decoupling structures [27][28][29][30][31]. The FSS sheet is kept below the antenna to bounce back the waves in order to upgrade the outcomes.…”

“…The FSS sheet is kept below the antenna to bounce back the waves in order to upgrade the outcomes. Due to the bounced-back radiation and antenna radiation, the overall performance is improved [16]. In the case of an absorber, an unwanted spectrum is eliminated to improve the function of the desired band.…”

“…Additionally, the size of the structure is quite large for a two-port configuration. In [12], a miniaturized UWB MIMO antenna design was presented. The MIMO antenna elements were composed of a combination of rectangle and semi-circular arc fed using a stepped microstrip fee line.…”
