A Mini-System Integrated with Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Sensor and Micro-Packed Gas Chromatographic Column

Abstract: In this work, a mini monitoring system integrated with a microfabricated metal oxide array sensor and a micro packed gas chromatographic (GC) column was developed for monitoring environmental gases. The microfabricated packed GC column with a 1.6 m length was used to separate the environmental gas, and the metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) array sensor, fabricated with nano-sized SnO-SnO2 sensitive materials, was able to effectively detect each component separated by GC column. The results demonstrate that the m… Show more

“…Most importantly, the detector measures even the lowest concentrations with high signal to noise ratio (i.e., 12 at 25 ppb) and clearly distinguishes these concentrations, thus fulfilling even the strictest guidelines. Lower concentrations were detected only with CoPP‐TiO 2 , [ 43 ] Au/MWCNT, [ 20 ] and a SnO–SnO 2 sensor coupled to a GC column, [ 44 ] though in dry air (Table 1 ). In addition, the present detector features fully reversible behavior and fast response time and recovery time (i.e., 36 and 47 s at 100 ppb, respectively; Figure 1d ).…”

“…Ultralow concentrations of BTEX components at the sub-ppb level (0.3 ppb) were identified and detected by this MOS sensor in GC analysis with a concentrator. The use of SnO-SnO 2 hybrid materials can detect benzene as low as 5 ppb without a concentrator [60]. In addition to BTEX analysis, μGC-MOS sensor systems have been employed to analyze ethylene and alcohols.…”

“…Over time, the cost of production of gas sensors has decreased significantly with a simultaneous increase in their efficiency. In recent years, gas-detection technology has grown in importance due to its availability and widespread use in the following areas: air-quality monitoring [ 10 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ], industrial production [ 24 , 25 , 31 , 32 ], food testing [ 10 , 21 , 26 , 27 , 33 , 34 , 35 ], automotive [ 10 , 23 , 27 , 35 , 36 , 37 ], industry [ 24 , 25 , 35 , 38 ], medical applications [ 10 , 22 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 35 , 39 , 40 , 41 ], fire warning [ 25 ], hazard monitoring [ 25 , 27 , 31 , 35 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ], monitoring of gases at ambient conditions [ 46 , 47 ], that is the one of the most actual important approach, etc. ...…”
