The aim of this study was to evaluate edemogenic activity and subcutaneous inflammatory reaction induced by Psidium cattleianum leaf extracts associated with Ca(OH) 2 . Thirty male Wistar rats, split equally into three groups [aqueous extract + Ca(OH) 2 ; ethanolic extract + Ca(OH) 2 ; and propylene glycol + Ca(OH) 2 ], were assessed every 3 h or 6 h (five animals in each period). Under general anesthesia, 0.2 mL of 1% Evans blue per 100 g of body weight was injected into the penile vein and each combination to be evaluated was subcutaneously injected into the dorsal region 30 min thereafter. Edemogenic activity was analyzed by spectrophotometry (λ=630 nm). For inflammatory reaction analysis, 50 rats received four polyethylene tubes (three experimental groups) and an empty tube (control group). The assessments were made at 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days, followed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and by the assignment of scores for evaluation of tissue response intensity. Ethanolic extract + Ca(OH) 2 yielded the largest edemogenic activity at 3 h. Intergroup differences at 6 h were not significant. The histological analysis showed progressive repair over time (p<0.05) and aqueous and ethanolic extracts produced similar responses to those of the control and Ca(OH) 2 + propylene glycol groups. Psidium cattleianum leaf extracts used as Ca(OH) 2 vehicles evoked similar tissue response when compared to Ca(OH) 2 associated with propylene glycol.

Introduction: Since periapical surgical therapy success depends on adequate apical seal, MTA has been recommended as the best retrofilling material.Objective: To assess whether the association between MTA and Fillapex sealer negatively affects the material apical sealing ability. To this end, apical leakage was tested with 1% rhodamine B was used. Methods: Fifty roots with straight canals were prepared by means of the ProTaper Universal system up to F5 instrument, and filled by means of the modified McSpaden technique. Specimens were divided into four groups: G1, G2 and G3 were subjected to apicoectomy and retropreparation with ultrasonic tip; whereas G4 did not undergo either apicoectomy nor retropreparation, and served as control.G1 was retrofilled with MTA-water, G2 was retrofilled with MTA-Fillapex, and G3 was not retrofilled, thereby serving as negative control. The roots of G4 received two coats of red nail polish, whereas the roots of G1, G2 and G3 were also coated, except in the region where apicoectomy was carried out. Specimens were immersed in 3 ml of 1% rhodamine B for 8 days and stored in an incubator at 37 °C and 100% humidity. In order to have microleakage assessed, the specimens were longitudinally cleaved, photographed and sent to three specialists in Endodontics who analyzed four levels of leakage: zero; 0-1 mm, 1-2 mm and 2-3 mm. Results: Results reveal that the MTA-Fillapex association had less leakage than MTA-water.

Objective: Under the Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) system, the newly introduced term 'hygroscopic dental cement' (HDC) encompasses MTA as well as cements based on bioceramics, calcium silicate or calcium sulphate. Many HDCs have a long history of use in dentistry. There is a need for a consistent, logical and informed approach to the nomenclature of traditional and novel HDCs. Methods: Commercial manufacturers of HDC were contacted requesting information on the compositions of products. Manufacturers that were unknown to the authors, that were unable to be contacted, that wished to be excluded from this paper, or that did not send their information on compositions in due time were not included. Results:The compositions of commercial HDCs include various hybrids of calcium silicates, calcium aluminates, calcium phosphates, calcium sulphate as well as zinc sulphates. Furthermore, there are variations in the radiopacifier as well as additives that change the handling or setting processes. Conclusion:The inclusion of different additives to HDCs enables variation in handling properties such that they now exist as distinct putties and sealers as well as cements.
