Thermal cracking of rocks is an intensively studied topic in different research areas and for various engineering problems. In this context, we present a modeling approach which describes thermal spalling of rocks with a focus on thermal spallation drilling. This drilling technology uses high thermal loads to locally destruct the surface of the rock formation. With the presented model, the operating conditions which are required to initiate spalling of rocks can be estimated. Additionally, a Spallability number is introduced allowing a categorization of rocks according to their ability to spall. The presented model is based on linear fracture mechanics and the stress intensity concept. It evaluates if a crack with a certain geometry embedded in a rock with specific properties propagates during exposure to different heat loads and external pressures. Thereby, rapid heat transfer processes are coupled with induced thermal stresses and fracture mechanics in rocks.

Due to crustal movement, coal-bearing strata weather and oxidise when exposed to the atmosphere and water. e unique geological characteristics of the rock in efflorescent oxidation zones lead to variations in lithology, weak rock, and large failures due to deformation. is paper analyses the variable physical mechanics and microstructural characteristics of efflorescentoxidised coal rock using the UDEC numerical simulation software. e software is used to study the gradual development, dynamic expansion, and deformation of cracks in the material surrounding efflorescent rock tunnels. ese numerical simulations reveal information concerning the evolution of surrounding rock attenuation, strength, and deformation. e destruction and causes of roadway failure were also analysed, and optimisation measures were proposed. e results from this study have applications for other research concerning roadway failure, deformation mechanisms, and the addition of appropriate supports.

This study involves the development of the auxiliary stress approach for producing elasticallyhomogeneous lattice models of damage in geomaterials. The lattice models are based on random, three-dimensional assemblages of rigid-body-spring elements. Unlike conventional lattice or particle models, the elastic constants of a material (e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio) are represented properly in both global and local senses, without any need for calibration. The proposed approach is demonstrated and validated through analyses of homogeneous and heterogeneous systems under uniand tri-axial loading conditions. Comparisons are made with analytical solutions and finite element results. Thereafter, the model is used to simulate a series of standard laboratory tests: (a) splitcylinder tests, and (b) uniaxial compressive tests of sedimentary rocks at the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory in Hokkaido, Japan. Model inputs are based on physical quantities measured in the experiments. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results in terms of pre-peak stress-strain/displacement responses, strength measurements, and failure patterns.
