Modularization of process plants with its standardization activities is one of the current responses to react to dynamic markets, shorter product life cycles, and uncertain supply chains. Standardized solutions for intelligent process equipment assemblies with own automation promise high potential for chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Despite the standardized description of the module type package (MTP) and the corresponding service concept, the implementation of the service logic is left to the manufacturer, which often leads to finding various granular services for different process functions or assemblies. In this contribution, different service design approaches for a generic ‘separate’ service are investigated on the example of a solvent extraction and a distillation column. Additionally, a Raman spectroscope device for process analysis is implemented via MTP with an ‘analyze’ service. Pros and cons of the different service design approaches are discussed in the context of a fast and flexible process development in the laboratory.

Frequent updates of business needs are one of the factors of the evolution of a company. These permanent changes require a large flexibility of the Information System (IS). SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) is an architecture that offers more scalability to an application by subdividing the monolithic block into independent services. Nevertheless, it is not sufficiently suitable in terms of accessibility of services and data. It is thus necessary to orient the design of the IS towards a new architecture called Microservice Architecture (MSA). The objective of this paper is to recommend a methodology to design MSA. Indeed, our approach is based on Praxeme which is an enterprise methodology appropriate to SOA. The result obtained from the approach proposed in this paper is a model allowing to automate the MSA design.

Modular process plants are a promising approach to accelerate the engineering of greenfield process plants. This is achieved by the combination of pre-engineered process equipment assemblies (PEAs) with a standardized interface for the integration in process control systems, the module type package (MTP). This standardized interface can be integrated in the engineering process to further improve the potential. In this paper existing standards are used to generate aspects of the MTP. For this purpose, the engineering process of conventional plants is adapted for the engineering of PEAs. Therefore, similarities and potential of the described aspects have been analyzed regarding shared fundamental standards and characterized by their location in the asset life cycle. To describe the interconnections of the different standards, exemplary rules are proposed, which can be used for a transformation.
