A microbiological six-plate method for the identification of certain antibiotic groups in incurred kidney and muscle samples

Abstract: A microbiological method was developed for group level identification of antibiotics in incurred kidney and muscle samples from cattle and pigs. The method was composed of six test bacterium-plate growth medium combinations and the result was recorded as a profile of growth inhibition zones. The sample profiles were compared to two sets of references: one constructed with standard antibiotic solution profiles, and the other with these combined with profiles of microbiologically and chemically identified residu… Show more

“…These methods use various strains of E. coli and substrates of various pH, e.g. E. coli Bayer 14 at pH 6 (Okerman et al 2001), E. coli RIK 144 at pH 6 (Nouws et al 1999b), E. coli ATCC 11303 at pH 7.2 (Myllyniemi et al 2001) and/or at pH 8 (Gaudin et al 2004). According to Choi et al (1999), the E. coli strain ATCC 128 was highly suitable as an indicator of microorganisms in a microbial inhibition test for selective detection of fluoroquinolone residues in animal tissues.…”

“…Analytical methods described in the literature for the analysis of quinolones in foods include instrumental techniques (Hernández-Arteseros et al 1998;Rose et al 1998;Roybal et al 2002), rapid immunological techniques (Tittlemier et al 2008;Scortichini et al 2009) and microbial methods (Currie et al 1998;Pikkemaat et al 2007;Fuselier et al 2000;Calderón et al 1996;Myllyniemi et al 2001;Cantwell and O'keeffe 2006;Gaudin et al 2009). …”

“…Thus, it should be noted that the TMP levels used for the bioassay preparation were higher than 200 and 60 µg/l used by Koenen-Dierick and De Beer (1998) and Myllyniemi et al (2001), respectively, for the diffusion tests in Petri dishes with B. subtilis BGA.…”
