A Micro Dissection of the Pachytene Threads of Tradescantia Virginica L. With Observations on Some Aspects of Mitosis

Abstract: A micro dissection of the pachytene threads of Tradescantia virginica L. shows that the relation of the chromosomes is a matter of continuous linkage in a chain and that, undoubtedly, division and segregation are everywhere processes of abstriction with subsequent mechanical distribution of the elements.

“…Meiotic behaviour has been studied in only a few triploids of complete translocation heterozygotes. Sands (1925) was the first to see characteristic chains in diploid Rhoeo but interpreted them in terms of the synapsis theory current at that time. The present in vestigation is based on a study of meiosis in a spontaneous triploid Rhoeo, which made its appearance in a population of Rhoeo discolor seedlings.…”

“…(SANDS 1925) and triploid tomatoes (LESLEY, M.M. 1926) a new fact was discovered that a continious spireme was formed by all the chromosome elements until the diakinesis or the metaphase, and later usually broken to a normal number of chromosomes.…”
