A micro–computed tomographic analysis of the root canal systems in the permanent mandibular incisors in a Chinese population

Abstract: Background Comprehensive understanding of the root canal system complexity is critical important for successful root canal therapy. A double root canal system may be present in permanent mandibular incisors with a variable incidence in different ethnic populations. Ignorance or improper management of this canal variation can lead to treatment failure. This in vitro study aimed to identify the anatomic features of root canal systems in the mandibular incisors in a Chinese population by using mic… Show more

“…Ethnic approval of the use of seven dry human mandibles and extracted human teeth was obtained from the Ethics Committee and the institutional review board (Issuing Number: KY2022-089-01) of the Ninth People’s Hospital of Suzhou. A total of 106 extracted permanent mandibular incisors were randomly collected from a native Chinese population as described previously [ 29 ], and the mean age of the subjects was 56.3 ± 16.7 years, ranging from 14 to 84 years.…”

“…However, all these techniques are feasible only in ex vivo experiments using extracted teeth 3 . Considering the anatomical aspects among dental types, one study found that root canals in first mandibular incisors were Vertucci type I (50%), II (62%) and III (28%) 4 , and another study found that root canals in lateral mandibular incisors were type I (30.2%) and III (18.9%) 5 . Mandibular first premolars are single-rooted teeth, well known for their anatomical variations, which can pose a challenge for endodontic treatment.…”
