Industry 5.0 arrived and sounded the alarms, warning entrepreneurs to adopt it as quickly as possible; the advantage is that this industry is still in its preliminary stages. However, there is little research on this model in the literature. In this context, the objective of this study was to analyze the current state of industry 5.0 in 215 publications from the Scopus database during the period 2019–2022. The applied methodology was quantitative analysis, with a bibliometric approach supported by the VOSviewer and RStudio software, in addition to the Microsoft Excel application. The results showed: (1) an exponential growth of article and conference paper publications in 2022, all indexed in journals of subject areas such as engineering and computer science; (2) four more industries influenced by i5.0, where the electronics sector leads well above manufacturing, energy and public service; (3) seven research topics associated with i5.0 that deal with the transition from industry 4.0 to 5.0; and (4) six little-explored research topics that would help i5.0 move to a new stage and which are related to environmental sustainability, social sustainability, cobots, bioeconomy, smart cities, and sentiment analysis. This study found a gap in the industry 5.0 literature; therefore, this document serves as a guide for future research.

In recent years, affective computing has emerged as a promising approach to studying user experience, replacing subjective methods that rely on participants’ self-evaluation. Affective computing uses biometrics to recognize people’s emotional states as they interact with a product. However, the cost of medical-grade biofeedback systems is prohibitive for researchers with limited budgets. An alternative solution is to use consumer-grade devices, which are more affordable. However, these devices require proprietary software to collect data, complicating data processing, synchronization, and integration. Additionally, researchers need multiple computers to control the biofeedback system, increasing equipment costs and complexity. To address these challenges, we developed a low-cost biofeedback platform using inexpensive hardware and open-source libraries. Our software can serve as a system development kit for future studies. We conducted a simple experiment with one participant to validate the platform’s effectiveness, using one baseline and two tasks that elicited distinct responses. Our low-cost biofeedback platform provides a reference architecture for researchers with limited budgets who wish to incorporate biometrics into their studies. This platform can be used to develop affective computing models in various domains, including ergonomics, human factors engineering, user experience, human behavioral studies, and human–robot interaction.

The fourth industrial revolution has driven companies of all sizes to embrace digitalization, recognizing the potential of AI technologies for data analysis and real-time decision-making. However, the adoption of AI by manufacturing SMEs faces challenges related to cost, accessibility, and the need for expertise. To address these challenges, this chapter introduces a groundbreaking platform developed as part of the EU H2020 KITT4SME project. The platform aims to democratize the adoption of AI tools by leveraging the “as-a-service” model, making them affordable and readily available for SMEs. It follows a five-step workflow (diagnose–compose–sense–intervene–evolve) to provide tailor-made AI solutions to SMEs. The distinctive functionality of the platform allows for the composition of AI components from a marketplace into a customized service offering for companies, filling a gap in existing AI platforms. The KITT4SME platform has been successfully applied in four use cases within the project and to 18 external demonstrators via Open Calls. This chapter presents one of the internal use cases to showcase the capabilities and benefits of the KITT4SME platform.
