A Methodology to Investigate Skin-Stringer Separation in Postbuckled Composite Stiffened Panels

Abstract: A methodology is presented to investigate and improve the strength and damage tolerance of stiffened composite panels used in aerospace structures subjected to postbuckling deformation. These structural panels have the capability to operate in the postbuckling field, but the possible interaction between the postbuckling deformation and the damage initiation and propagation is yet to be fully understood. The developed methodology considers singlestringer specimens representative of stiffened panels to analyze s… Show more

“…A solution would be developing MAPOD curves at a specimen level for different opening modes and opening mode-mixity. Then, using a building block approach [ 64 ], one could transpose the results to a higher-level component, selecting the MAPOD curve obtained in the scenario that better approximates the expected strain field near the damaged location.…”

“…The single-stringer specimen is chosen such that the buckling deformation of the panel is replicated [9]. The panel length parallel to the stringer is 140 mm while the width is 254 mm.…”

“…A methodology is currently under development to study the interaction between the skin-stringer separation and the postbuckled shape of multi-stringer panels using single-stringer specimens [9]. This paper investigates the initiation of skin-stringer separation using an analytical approach.…”

“…Pennas, 29 Browning, 30,31 and Mehrabadi et al 32 studied the mode III stratified fracture of composite materials using the ECT method, which is an effective test method for the mode III fracture toughness that is widely used in engineering applications at present. 33 Kootte et al [34][35][36] developed the ECT test method for characterizing the mode III fracture of the skin-stiffener interface induced by post-buckling. Their new test setup recreates the fourpoint layout that can trigger separation due to twisting.…”
