A Methodology to Detect and Characterize Uplift Phenomena in Urban Areas Using Sentinel-1 Data

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology to exploit the Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) time series acquired by Sentinel-1 sensors for the detection and characterization of uplift phenomena in urban areas. The methodology has been applied to the Tower Hamlets Council area of London (United Kingdom) using Sentinel-1 data covering the period 2015-2017. The test area is a representative high-urbanized site affected by geohazards due to natural processes such as compaction of recent deposits, and also anthropog… Show more

“…Aquifer mismanagement has always been a main triggering cause for ground deformation, as testified by numerous authors [5][6][7][8][9]21,25], with different mechanisms according to the type of aquifer involved. In this work, a pyroclastic-alluvial aquifer was investigated, analyzing the cause-effect relationship between groundwater level rise and ground deformation.…”

“…Such features are able to provide a deformation measurement over definite targets on the ground. DInSAR techniques have been largely implemented on large metropolitan areas such as Mexico City [15,16], Murcia [17], Rome [18], London [19][20][21].…”

“…The input data is the dataset of the principal score (PC) filtered using a threshold for the significant PC score selection (Bonì et al, 2016). The PC score is an output of the PCA, obtained for each target and useful to evaluate the correlations with the principal components in the whole dataset (Bonì et al, 2018); the higher values correspond to higher correlations with the analyzed PC (Jolliffe and Cadima, 2016).…”

“…Advanced InSAR techniques enable time series analysis of multi-temporal SAR data and provide a good set of tools for ground deformation measurements with millimeter precision [13][14][15]. Previous studies used multi-temporal InSAR technique for analysis of land subsidence due to over exploitation of groundwater [16][17][18][19][20], urban area deformation [21][22][23][24], mining region stability [25][26][27], landslide phenomena [28][29][30], sinkhole detection [31,32] and seismic events [33,34].…”
