A methodology for preliminary sizing of a Thermal and Energy Management System for a hypersonic vehicle

Abstract: This paper addresses a methodology to parametrically size thermal control subsystems for high-speed transportation systems during the conceptual design phase. This methodology should be sufficiently general to be exploited for the derivation of Estimation Relationships (ERs) for geometrically sizing characteristics as well as mass, volume and power budgets both for active (turbopumps, turbines and compressors) and passive components (heat exchangers, tanks and pipes). Following this approach, ad-hoc semi-empir… Show more

“…The first test case is about STRATOFLY MR3 [41] highly integrated hypersonic vehicle, where propulsion, aerothermodynamics, structures, and on-board subsystems are strictly interrelated with one another, as highlighted in Figure 3. As already highlighted in previous publications, the thermal and energy management for this type of vehicle is crucial [42][43].…”

“…Example of approaches on the topic are common in literature, 57,58 but unexpectedly, the efforts required to reach model convergence can be higher if compared to performance characterization campaigns, since their range of applicability can be restricted to very specific case studies, while universal validity may not be guaranteed. This is also the reason why, especially in aeronautics, physical characterization processes have been studied for a long time, suggesting best practices and relationships already some decades ago.…”

“…Static models developed by Politecnico di Torino [13] have been used at the beginning of the STRATOFLY project to perform a preliminary mass, volume and power budgets estimation, considering the Mach 8 cruise as the most demanding condition. Then, these models have been integrated into a more complex dynamic model with the purpose of widening the investigation to verify the behavior of the subsystem along the entire mission.…”

“…Eventually, thanks to the dynamic model, it is also possible to check the behavior of the overall TEMS, looking for example at the main power demand or at the overall available boil-off, see Fig. 29 [17].…”
