A Methodology for Longitudinal Tooth Flank Crowning of the Helical Gear on a CNC Honing Machine

Abstract: The gear honing is the most economical way for hard finishing an involute helical gear after hobbing and heat treatment or after shaving and heat treatment. The gear honing can also be applied to the modification of gear tooth surfaces to compensate for the distortions that occur during heat treatment process. Most published papers on the technology of gear honing describes on the principle of generated gear surface. However, the longitudinal tooth flank crowning of a helical gear with honing has not been inve… Show more

“…Many studies of gear honing are focused on the modification methodology. Tran [3] proposed a new way for longitudinal tooth flank crowning of work gear surfaces in honing process. Han [4] developed a mathematical model for lead and profile crowning modification of work gear by setting the movement of the honing wheel as two forth-order polynomial functions.…”

“…Recently, Tran et al [7] proposed a novel hobbing method to free-twist tooth flanks of the involute helical gear in longitudinal tooth on CNC hobbing machine. Subsequently, Tran et al [8,9] proposed a gear honing method for longitudinal crowning and free-twist tooth flank of work gear surfaces in the external honing process. All basic mesh conditions for the helical gear set have been presented in textbook [10].…”
