This study explored how usability was dealt with in four product development organizations active in different sectors: high-end automotive, professional printers and copiers, office coffee makers and fast moving consumer goods. The primary differentiators of the selected cases were whether they were targeting businesses or consumers and the degree of product complexity. Interviews with 19 product development practitioners were conducted, focusing on three topics: 1) the product development process and the integration of user involvement, 2) multidisciplinary teamwork, and 3) organizational attitude towards usability. Based on the interviews, context descriptions of the companies were created and barriers and enablers for usability were identified. To verify the findings and to discuss remaining issues a feedback workshop was held in which the primary contact from each company participated. The results indicate that differences in product-market combination lead to differences in organizational attitude towards usability. The prioritization of usability in an organization seems to be influenced by the degree of product complexity (complex products are more prone to suffer from usability issues) and whether developers think that usability is a purchase consideration for their clients. The product-market combination a company targets also affects the methods for user-centred design that a company can apply and that are relevant. What methods for user-centred design are used also seems to be influenced by the attitude towards usability: if usability is considered more important, methods that require more resources can be applied.

Objectiv e:The present study was to improve the graphic user interface (GUI) of a military computer-based training (CBT) system in terms of usability.Background: Existing studies have focused on usability evaluation of a particular GUI type such as sequence, hierarchy, or context type; however, few research has been conducted which identifies preferred GUI features based on a comparative analysis of different GUI types. Method:A comparative evaluation was conducted by 9 CBT design experts using a 7-point scale (1: very low, 4: neutral, and 7: very high) on hierarchy and context GUI types of a military CBT system in terms of 10 usability criteria. Then, preferred features of the hierarchy and context types being accommodated, a new GUI was developed and validated by 22 CBT users.Results: While the hierarchy type was found preferred by 1.6 times in terms of controllability to the context type, the opposite was found in terms of attractiveness, simplicity, and responsiveness by 0.6, 0.8, and 0.8 times, respectively. The proposed GUI was found superior to the hierarchy and context types in terms of accessibility and informativeness by more than 1.5 times, but inferior to the hierarchy and context type in terms of simplicity by 0.6 and 0.9 times, respectively. Conclusion:The new GUI developed by accommodating the preferred features of the hierarchy and context types improves usability in terms of accessibility and informativeness except simplicity. Application:The comparative analysis of various GUIs can be applied to develop an improved GUI in a systematic manner based on preferred features of the existing GUIs.

A Study of the Hand Operating Thresholds during the Usage of an Electric Steam Iron by College Students

Among various types of home appliances, an electric steam iron has a higher risk since it needs to operate under a condition with a higher range of temperature. In this study, a group of college students were invited to operate an electric iron during the experiment in order to investigate the correlation between an operator's hand and the possible contact with the iron soleplate during usage. The purpose of this study was to determine the hand portions which could easily get burned and the portions of the iron soleplate which tend to cause injuries. The results of this study indicated that the hand portions which could easily touch the soleplate are the right-hand side of the thumb and the forefinger. On the other hand, the portions on the soleplate which tend to cause burns are on the left-hand side of the iron, especially the sharper and upper half. The results serve as a good reference for follow-up designers on an iron design based on the safety consideration.
