A methodology for 3D modeling and visualization of geological objects

Abstract: Geological body structure is the product of the geological evolution in the time dimension, which is presented in 3D configuration in the natural world. However, many geologists still record and process their geological data using the 2D or 1D pattern, which results in the loss of a large quantity of spatial data. One of the reasons is that the current methods have limitations on how to express underground geological objects. To analyze and interpret geological models, we present a layer data model to organize… Show more

“…Three-dimensional geological modeling technology is needed to study the evolution and metallogenic regularity, establishing mineralization pattern and making metallogenic prognosis. Many experts have made great advances in three-dimensional modeling field with different softwares [4][5][6][7] . This paper is accomplished in the use of the Minexplorer software developed by Institute of Mineral Resources in Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.…”

“…For network based GIS applications, navigation speed is usually paid more attention, so how to improve the interactive operation has absorbed many researchers [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. One way to solve this problem is to construct efficient simplified models and to improve algorithms by adopting new data structures [1,2].…”

“…There is already a significant amount of literatures on 3D topological models [2][3][4][5], the expression framework of spatial relations [6][7][8], visualization mechanisms [9][10][11][12][13][14], integration of 3D GIS data [15][16][17] and spatial databases [18][19][20][21][22]. These 3D spatial data models have already been applied to various fields such as digital cities [23][24][25][26][27][28], digital oceans [29] and digital mines [30,31].…”
