In the past decades, a large amount of research was conducted to investigate the application prospect of microwave heating technology in improving the efficiency of asphalt pavement self-healing and de-icing. This paper reviewed the achievements in this area. Firstly, the properties of asphalt concrete after microwave heating were summarized, including microwave sensitivity and heating uniformity. Then, the evaluation indicators and influence factors of the self-healing properties of the asphalt mixtures heated by microwave were reviewed. Finally, the application of microwave heating in asphalt pavement de-icing was explored. In addition, asphalt pavement aging due to microwave heating was also reviewed. It was found that microwave heating technology has good prospects in promoting asphalt pavement self-healing and de-icing. There are also some problems that should be studied in depth, such as the cost-effectiveness of microwave-sensitive additives (MSAs), the performance of the pavement with MSAs, mechanism-based self-healing performance indicators, and the aging of asphalt pavements under cycling microwave heating.

Asphalt is a self-healing material at a specific temperature. The induced heating-healing of asphalt has been developed in the last few decades; an inductive asphalt can be created by adding inductive material. This paper aims to predict the performance of induction heating as a self-healing method on asphalt. This numerical simulation is carried out to obtain a suitable induction heater configuration. Numerical simulation is carried out in two stages, electrical analysis with ANSYS Electronics Desktop software and thermal analysis with ANSYS Transient Thermal Analysis. A cylindrical inductive asphalt sample is modeled and subjected to an electromagnetic field by a coil flowed by a high-frequency AC. As a result, a comparative temperature distribution is obtained by several current and frequency variations. The difference in current magnitude and frequency that flowed in the coil affects asphalt's heating performance and healing capacity. An increase in the frequency configuration results in a more significant increase in temperature than increasing the current magnitude in the coil.

Optimised Sunflower Oil Content for Encapsulation by Vibrating Technology as a Rejuvenating Solution for Asphalt Self-Healing

This study aimed to determine an optimal dosage of sunflower oil (i.e., Virgin Cooking Oil, VCO) as a rejuvenator for asphalt self-healing purposes, evaluating its effect on the chemical (carbonyl, and sulfoxide functional groups), physical (penetration, softening point, and viscosity), and rheological (dynamic shear modulus, and phase angle) properties of long-term aged (LTA) bitumen. Five concentrations of sunflower oil (VCO) were used: 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% vol. of LTA bitumen. VCO was encapsulated in alginate biopolymer under vibrating jet technology using three biopolymer:oil (B:O) mass ratios: 1:1, 1:5, and 1:9. The physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the capsules were studied, as well as their effect on the physical properties of dense asphalt mixtures. The main results showed that an optimal VCO content of 4% vol. restored the chemical, physical, and rheological properties of LTA bitumen to a short-term ageing (STA) level. VCO capsules with B:O ratios of 1:5 presented good thermal and mechanical stability, with high encapsulation efficiency. Depending on the B:O ratio, the VCO capsule dosage to rejuvenate LTA bitumen and asphalt mixtures varied between 5.03–15.3% wt. and 0.24–0.74% wt., respectively. Finally, the capsule morphology significantly influenced the bulk density of the asphalt mixtures.
