“…Since the collection and analysis of the samples considered in this paper, one apparent bias in the coarse filter mass and elemental concentrations has been documented: the loss of coarse particles from filters during transit from the field to the EPA in North Carolina. A recent paper by Dzubay and Barbour 20 has revealed that dropping packaged teflon filter trays (five times from a height of 2.3 m) results in coarse particle mass losses of 19-53% of mass, but no measurable losses from fine filter masses. In our in-house analysis of hand-carried coarse and fine samples, preliminary results confirm an average loss of 30-35% in coarse samples in the mail, but no measurable difference in fine filter masses.…”
