A Method to Estimate Students’ Exposure to Road Traffic Noise Events

Abstract: Abstract:The correlation between exposure to traffic noise and students' performance and annoyance has been investigated in literature mainly considering the relationship between indoor equivalent A-weighted sound pressure level (L Aeq ) and students' cognitive impairment. Annoyance is frequently related to the effect of short-duration noise events characterized by high sound pressure levels, such as those due to aircraft fly-over and pass-by of buses, heavy trucks, motorcycles, or street sweepers. These noise… Show more

“…In relation to the environmental conditions, lighting could be smart, adapted to different spaces and tasks at the same time and in real time [78,79]. Additionally, acoustics can be smart, adapted to spaces that need to mix silence, debates, discussions, brainstorming and oral presentations [70][71][72][73][74]77,81]. The colours of the learning spaces have to be adapted to student needs according the type of activity, at the same time that Smart walls permit students to write, present and share ideas and knowledge [49,52].…”

“…It can be considered that the noise coming from outdoors, when considered as a equivalent sound level, as required in the evaluation of the STI, is usually lower than the noise produced inside the office and also in the cases of noisy outdoor environments, as shown in previous studies of the author [42]. The effect of short duration noise events coming from outdoors (such as sirens, passing of very noise vehicles and others) could reduce the intelligibility inside the office when the sound insulation given by the façade is low [18]. Anyway, these short duration noise events are not properly evaluated in the analysis of the Speech Transmission Index, since the study of this parameter requires the use of a continuous and uniform background noise.…”

“…In urban areas, the environmental noise is frequently very high [17,18] and so the windows are shut with the consequence of poor air quality.…”

“…Secchi et al developed a method to estimate students' exposure to road traffic noise events [9] from data available on noise maps by the municipalities of metropolitan areas, using regression equations obtained between L Aeq and A-weighted maximum and statistical levels due to road traffic noise. The traffic noise of 28 urban streets was monitored during the opening period of Italian schools.…”
