A method for the solution of certain non-linear problems in least squares

Abstract: The standard method for solving least squares problems which lead to non-linear normal equations depends upon a reduction of the residuals to linear form by first order Taylor approximations taken about an initial or trial solution for the parameters.2 If the usual least squares procedure, performed with these linear approximations, yields new values for the parameters which are not sufficiently close to the initial values, the neglect of second and higher order terms may invalidate the process, and may actual… Show more

“…Rate constants for arterial clearance and brain uptake of the tracer were estimated by nonlinear regression using a Levenberg-Marquart least-squares minimization proce dure (Levenberg, 1944) implemented in MA TLAB (The Math Works, Inc., South Natick, MA, U.S.A.) on a Mac intosh Quadra 950. Equation 2 was solved analytically as the convolution of the input function, Ca(t), by the im pulse response function, which was a sum of n exponen tials…”

“…Kinetic rate constants were derived by nonlinear regression using a Levenberg-Marquardt least-squares minimization procedure (Levenberg, 1944) implemented in MATLAB (Math Works) as described previously (Laruelle et al, 1994). Given the unequal sampling over time (increasing frame acquisition time from beginning to end of the study), the least-squares minimization procedure was weighted by the square root of the frame acquisition time.…”
