Summary This paper deals with floor acceleration spectra, which are used for the seismic design and assessment of acceleration‐sensitive equipment installed in buildings. In design codes and in practice, not enough attention has been paid to the seismic resistance of such equipment. An ‘accurate’ determination of floor spectra requires a complex and quite demanding dynamic response history analysis. The purpose of the study presented in this paper is the development of a direct method for the determination of floor acceleration spectra, which enables their generation directly from the design spectrum of the structure, by taking into account the structure's dynamic properties. The method is also applicable to inelastic structures, which can greatly improve the economic aspects of equipment design. A parametric study of floor acceleration spectra for elastic and inelastic single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) and multiple‐degree‐of‐freedom structures was conducted by using (non)linear response history analysis. The equipment was modelled as an elastic single‐degree‐of‐freedom system. The proposed method was validated by comparing the results obtained with the more accurate results obtained in a parametric study. Due to its simplicity, the method is an appropriate tool for practice. In the case of inelastic structural behaviour, the method should be used in combination with the N2 method, or another appropriate method for simplified nonlinear structural analysis. This paper addresses the prediction of the median peak floor total acceleration (PFA) demand in spatial elastic structures subjected to seismic excitation. The prediction is based on various response spectrum methods of different degrees of sophistication. Beginning with a recently presented complete-quadraticcombination (CQC) rule for PFA demands, several approximations and simplifications concerning the correlation between modal contributions, peak factors, and cross-spectral moments are discussed, leading to the proposed modified modal combination rules. On several earthquake-excited multi-story spatial generic frame structures, the accuracy of the considered rules is assessed. The outcomes of response history analysis serves as benchmark solution. The results show that the modified CQC rules are simple in practical application and lead to reliable estimations of the median PFA demand of spatial structures with negligible loss of accuracy if peak factors are considered.

Nonstructural components (eg, suspended ceilings, equipment, and piping systems) resonate with buildings and could suffer severe damage during strong earthquakes. The aim of the present study is to evaluate resonance properties based on the duration of ground motions for elastic nonstructural components. First, it is theoretically shown that the value of the dynamic amplification ratio (DAR) of nonstructural components can be bounded to a certain domain according to the extent of structural damping. Second, we propose a direct method for evaluating the expected value of the DAR, which does not require a time‐history analysis, using distinct dimensionless values related to structural properties and earthquake ground motions. Finally, the proposed estimation method is statistically verified based on time‐history analysis using thousands of recorded ground motions.
