A method for measuring coalbd methane content in coal strata without the loss of the gas

Abstract: This paper describes an invented method for direct measurement of coalbed methane content in situ. In contrast to known procedures, this method does not need to place a rock or drilling cuts into an airtight canister, and does not involve sealing of the hole. Moreover, the new method is monitoring methane content in situ continuously and synchronously during drilling the hole not losing any portion of the gas. These positive features are a sequel of new approach based on injection of known portion of neutral g… Show more

“…Coal seam gas content is a key parameter in the exploration and development of coalbed methane resources, which can effectively predict the occurrence of protrusion, examine the effectiveness of regional antisurge, and evaluate the degree of coal mine gas hazard. The methods of coal bed gas content determination are divided into direct method and indirect method. , The process of the indirect method to determine coal seam gas content is complicated, the measurement period is long, and the success rate is low, so the direct method is mostly used to measure coal seam gas content underground in China. The direct method of measuring coal seam gas content mainly includes three parts: determination of gas desorption in underground coal samples, determination of residual gas in a laboratory, and extrapolation of gas loss during sampling, of which the first two parts can be measured according to relevant requirements, and the results are real and reliable.…”

“…The research basis for the method, its scope of application and uncertainty of measurement according to the method have also been presented by the authors [1,3]. In the world mining industry, the methane content of coal seams is mostly determined using direct methods, which are more accurate than indirect methods [4][5][6][7].…”
