A Method for Establishing the Representational Validity of Interaction Coding Systems: Do We See What They See?

Abstract: This paper offers a new methodological approach to establishing the validity of interaction coding schemes, and it reports research which applies these procedures to three coding systems that have been used to study small group decision making: Bales' (1950) Interaction Process Analysis System, Fisher's (1970) Decision Proposal Coding System, and Mabry's (1975) Pattern Variable Coding System. The procedures offered here provide a method for determining whether the functions or constructs identified by a coding… Show more

“…Second, the validity of the conversational representation task was examined. Poole and Folger (1981) have argued that any category system for classifying communication acts should be consistent with how individuals actually think about communication. A validation of the conversation representation procedure requires, at minimum, that the topics/speech-action distinction be shown to have relevance to people.…”

“…Coding schemes must be both reliable and valid (Folger et al, 1984;Poole & Folger, 1981a, 1981b. Reliability refers to the consistency of coding classifications across coders.…”

“…For subject-privileged meanings, 'representational validity' should be demonstrated in addition to face and construct validity. Representational validity is indicated by whether the interpretations yielded by the coding system correspond to those of the group members, or the population to which the group members belong (for calculation procedures see Poole & Folger, 1981a).…”

“…Therefore, research is needed to understand the perceptions of a more general group of requesters regarding the relative politeness of refusals containing or omitting modal expressions. Such research would contribute a measure of representational validity (Poole & Folger, 1981) to existing theorizing about the role of modals in refusal messages.…”
