The results of experimental research on forecasting post-fire resistance to brittle failure of selected steel grades used in construction are presented and discussed in this paper. The conclusions are based on detailed analysis of fracture surfaces obtained in instrumented Charpy tests. It has been shown that the relationships formulated based on these tests agree well with conclusions drawn based on precise analysis of appropriate F–s curves. Furthermore, other relationships between lateral expansion LE and energy Wt required to break the sample constitute an additional verification in both qualitative and quantitative terms. These relationships are accompanied here by values of the SFA(n) parameter, which are different, depending on the character of the fracture. Steel grades differing in microstructure have been selected for the detailed analysis, including: S355J2+N—representative for materials of ferritic-pearlitic structure, and also stainless steels such as X20Cr13—of martensitic structure, X6CrNiTi18-10—of austenitic structure and X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 duplex steel—of austenitic-ferritic structure.

Kernels are widely used in the food industry because of their high nutritional value. The nutshell obtained by hulling is used as an absorbent. Currently, hulling is carried out without pre-treatment of the shell. However, lowering the temperature allows for reducing the material's strength. When the temperature of cold brittleness is reached, the shell's strength characteristics are reduced, which decreases the cost of breaking. To determine the tensile strength of hazelnut shells at various temperatures, the authors used the method of compressive testing. Compressive testing of materials was carried out using a PM-MG4 universal hydraulic testing machine. An Evercam 1000-8-M highspeed camera was used to determine the deformation amount. To reveal the material's propensity to brittle fracture, the samples were subjected to dynamic loading on a special installation -a pendulum-type copra. Determining the temperature of cold brittleness allowed for designing highly efficient methods of hulling and its instrumentation. The article presents methods for studying the shell's strength characteristics at various temperatures in the range from 25 to -190℃. The results for compressive strength and impact strength of the shell at different temperatures were given. The range of cold brittleness of the shell was determined. The experimental results showed that a decrease in the temperature of the shell led to a transition from mixed to brittle character of the shell's destruction at a temperature range of -40...-80℃. Lowering the shell's temperature reduced its tensile strength by an average of 25-30%, depending on the size of the nut. The obtained results can be used in the development of new methods and technologies based on them for hulling hazelnuts. The values of the shell's tensile strength can be used in the design and calculation of equipment for breaking.

This research is the integration of a set of elements in a system of capturing, processing, and digital image analysis. It allows a better visual and numeric interpretation to determine the toughness, ductility percentage, and fragility of steel AISI/SAE 1020 and 30, getting better qualitative and quantitative observation of the results from the impact test (Charpy test). Patterns in the standard form, ASTM E23, were digitalized to evaluate the percentage of ductility/fragility of specimen testing. After, we calculated the area and the equivalent diameter of the material. using digital image processing and numerical comparison between the patterns specified in the standard form ASTM E23 and the testing in the impact test, and it allows to find the kind of pattern it is closest and determine which degree of ductility. Finally, the results were compared by three experts. The algorithm accuracy was 80%.
