A method for defining targets in contemporary incisor inclination correction

Abstract: Different craniofacial properties require individual targets in incisor inclination. These requirements are mostly scheduled on the basis of cephalometric diagnosis, but, however, performed using straightwire appliances, which refer to third-order angles and not to cephalometric data. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between incisor third-order angles, incisor inclination, and skeletal craniofacial findings in untreated ideal occlusion subjects with natural dentoalveolar compensation… Show more

“…Three studies reported findings based on observation of untreated occlusion that was not necessarily ideal, 33 - 35 three studies evaluated individuals receiving orthodontic treatment, 16 , 36 , 37 and seven studies involved ideal untreated occlusion. 19 , 38 - 43 The age range was relatively broad. Two studies did not specify the age of the patients, 16 , 36 two studies stated the study subjects as adolescents, 37 , 41 and two studies described the patients as young adults or adults, but the age range was not otherwise specified.…”

“…Ghahferokhi 8) and Richmond et al 18,19) described the importance of recording the dental cast in three dimensions and reported a correlation of angle between the maxillary incisor's long axis and the palatal plane and the torque angular measurements with a method of recording incisor inclination using the Tooth Inclination Protractor (TIP) appliance, which was used to record maxillary and mandibular incisor inclinations on 47 maxillary and mandibular dental casts. Knösel et al 11,12) reported the relationship between the maxillary incisor's long axis to the NA line and third-order angle according to Andrews' description using lateral radiographs and corresponding dental casts of 67 non-orthodontic patients ranging from 10 to 25 years in age, regardless of skeletal or dental relationships.…”
